Lucca

First a Ligurian and then an Etruscan settlement, in 180 BC. Lucca became a Roman colony. Following the fall of the Roman Empire, the city was conquered by the Goths and during the 6th century it became the capital of the Lombard Duchy of Tuscia. Upon the fall of the latter, it became the seat of the Marquisate of Tuscany.

In 1119 Lucca was established as a free municipality, and then transformed into a Podesteria, in which power was governed by representatives of the new merchant class, which was beginning to develop in that period. Alongside the`silk industry, an intense banking activity also developed, thanks to which Lucca became an important economic center at a European level.

In the same period, being crossed by the Via Francigena, Lucca became a fundamental stop on the pilgrimage that brought the Christians of northern Europe to Rome.

Involved in the wars between Pisa and Florence and in the struggle between the Guelphs and Ghibellines, and dominated for some time by Uguccione della Faggiuola, Castruccio Castracani and the Guinigi family, Lucca became a republic in 1430 and maintained its independence until 1799.

In 1805 Napoleon, at the request of the Senate of Lucca, established the Principality of Lucca and Piombino, assigning it to his sister Elisa and her husband, Felice Baciocchi.

With the Congress of Vienna and the Restoration, the Duchy of Lucca was created, attributed to the Bourbons of Parma. Maria Luisa of Bourbon was succeeded by her son, Carlo Ludovico (1824), who reigned until 1847, when the duchy became part of the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

In 1860 Lucca and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany were annexed to the Kingdom of`Italy.

VICINI ALLA TOSCANA

Le 5 Terre

The Cinque Terre (Çinque Tære in Ligurian) is a jagged stretch of coast of the eastern Ligurian Riviera (La Spezia Riviera) located in the territory of the province of La Spezia between Punta Mesco and Punta di Montenero, in which there are five villages or, as they said in ancient times, lands, listed here from west to east: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, Riomaggiore.

Since 1997 they have been part of the list of UNESCO World Heritage Sites, with the following motivation:

«The eastern Ligurian Riviera of the Cinque Terre is a cultural landscape of exceptional value that represents the harmonious interaction established between man and nature to create a landscape of exceptional quality, which manifests a thousand-year-old traditional way of life and which continues to play a leading socioeconomic role in the life of society.»

Thanks to the geographical and anthropic characteristics of the territory where they are located, the Cinque Terre are considered one of the most evocative Italian coastal attractions, due to their naturally harsh and rugged hilly orographic context, softened by the construction of terraces or bands for cultivation, which descends towards the sea with steep slopes; in the points where the sea serpentinely insinuates itself into the land there are villages, articulated to follow the natural shape of the hills.

The work of man, over the centuries, has shaped the territory by building the famous terraces on the sea slopes, due to the particular agricultural technique aimed at exploiting as much as possible the steeply sloping land that slopes down towards the sea, thus making it one of the most characteristic and fascinating landscapes of Liguria.
